In 1691 the town of Salem was of anything but its namesake. Nine-year-old Elizabeth Parris and twelve-year-old Abigail Williams, daughter and neice of Reverend Samuel Parris, began to practice the art of fortune telling with Tituba, the family slave from Barbados. This also being a sign of witchery, which even at a young age both girls knew it to be. Tituba would place the whites from an egg in a clear glass of water and hold the glass aboe an open flame, telling the youn girls the figures they was saw were their futures husbands.
Elizabeth and Abigal later claimed to be afflicted in January 1692. Both would scream and press their hands over heir ears whenever the Lord's prayer was said. Elizabeth even threw a Bible across the room. Elizabeth also spoke of being condemned unavoidable for her, mainly since fortunetelling (which her father knew none about) was seen as witchery or demonic. In February that same year, Doctor William Griggs of Salem Village dianosed Abigail and Elizabeth as being afflicted by witchery. After Reverend Parris and Doctor Griggs questioned the girls tirelessly three names were cried out: Sarah Good, Sarah Osborne, and Tituba herself.
Many more girls in Salem began to experience similar behavior as Abigail and Elizabeth. All starting to call out more witches. Ann Putnam Jr. being amoung the afflicted girls. Ann began to accuse many people whom her mother, Ann Putnam Senior would name. Ann Senior pressed her daughter to call out the names of many of her mother's enemies. All of which she claimed killed the unborn children of her mother's and aunt's unborn children. Ann Jr. was the accuser of both Rebecca Nurse (age seventy-one) and her two sisters.
