Salem Village was founded in Massachusetts during 1692. Salem meaning 'Peace' from the Bible. Salem was a strict and religious village. Women were told to keep in their place and held less rights as men. Men were rulers of their households. Everyone was expected to attend to weekly Meetings at the public Meeting House, with Reverend Samuel Parris preaching the weekly surmines. Those who did not attend the weekly meeting, were considered to be suspicious and untrustworthy.
