On Agust 9th, 1692 five more people, including Reverend George Burroughs, were hung. Before Burroughs was hung he confidently faced his accusers and recited clearly, word-for-word, the Lord's Prayer. Something that was said no witch could do. Burroughs final act on this Earth hand planted the much needed seed of doubt into peoples' minds and hearts.
Giles Corey was also accused of witchery. Corey was not the only man to have been accused during this time, but what stands Corey from the rest is the cause of his death. Refusing to plead innocent or guilty Corey was pressed with larged stones on top of him. Every time he was asked to admit to being a witch he remained silent. And everytime a large rock was placed upon him. The only words he spoke were, "More weight". It took two days for Corey to die from a broken ribcage on September 19th, 1692
At the same time as Burroughs, The Court of Oyer, to hear, and Treminer, to determine, were debaiting whether any witches had visited Salem in the first place. Many members held doubt. The doubt increased rapidly as the afflicted girls stories and accusations led to more upper class people being accused such as the wives of Governor Phipps and Reverend Increase Mather. Which led to specutal evidence, which had condemned many before, to be deemed unreliable.
However this had not stopped the final hanginf on September 22, 1692 in which eight victims were hung. Nicholas Noyse looked at the eight swaying corpses and exclaimed loudly, "What a sad thing to see eight firebrands of hell hanging there."
