The Court of Oyer and Terminer then ended the Salem Witch Trials for good, but the damage was done. Twenty-four people had died; nineteen hung, four in prison, and one pressed to death by stones. On October 29th, 1692 the Court of Oyer and Terminer was ended by Govenor Phipps, and the remaining accused in prison were released. Increase Mather, of the Court of Oyer and Terminer, wrote in his book Cases of Conscience, "It were better than ten suspected witches escape, than that one innocent person should be condemned."
Five years later in January 1697 the town of Salem held a public fasting begging God to forgive them of the previous sins. In 1706 Ann Putnam stood in front of the people of Salme and blaimed the devil for her actions and openly apologiesed, being the only afflicted girl to apologies. Abigail Williams had previously ran away from Salem, to return twenty years later to be chased out.
In 1711 the state of Massachusetts gave the survivors of the witch trials six hundred British pounds. And twenty-two of the remaining thrity-one accused recieved back their citizen rights. Justice systems after began to be cautious of how they looked at the evidence of the accused. After the witch trials Americans have been given the right of being innocent until proven guilty.
And yet after the trials have past historians are still worried. This was not and will not be the last witch hunt to have taken place. If the girls really were being posessed then what caused them to think like they did. Could it happen again? Only time will tell.
